Yup.
Was there for it and we all went suitably mental as we saw Bailey had got a hand to it regardless of the fact it was indirect.
Rxcept the ref had different ideas.
Even Parksey went up to Bailey afterwards to comment that the free kick must have taken a fair bit of rubber off his gloves.

Pat Nevin on his day was unplayable... remember one game at the Bridge we couldn’t get near him...
Big Dave Kelly was an interesting one... wasnt us and Bayern Munich who were in for him... we won... well you know what i mean... seems it was only at our place he struggled.... his record everywhere else was pretty good....

Went to most home games that season and the Chelsea game was the killer for me , remember watching pat Nevin having a fitness test on the pitch beforehand and thinking I hope he failed it !

I honestly don’t think complacency was the issue after the 85/86 season.
As I said earlier the likes of Parris, Dickens, Orr & Pike played above themselves that season but were never good enough to play at that level consistently.
Parkes & Devonshire pretty much had their last hurrah that season and were on their way down.
To have built on that season we would have needed to bring in 4 quality players for Goalkeeper, Left back, centre mid, winger and kept Paul Goddard to push Macca & TC.

In answer to you’re question below, no I don’t think Lyall lost ambition but he did seem to lose his touch when it came to identifying new signings.
A lot is said about Pellegrini signing Roberto and almost costing us relegation but you could argue that Lyall’s signing of Alan McKnight did cost us relegation. Certainly that along with replacing Tony Cottee with Dave Kelly.

The Chelsea game got called off last minute on Boxing Day and I think that cost us as we were flying and they were struggling. By the time of the rearrangement they were playing well and we’d come off our peak

Arsenal away macavennie was through with the keeper to beat a few times but just couldn’t score. Best game that season was Everton at home. 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go and macavennie took over. Got two and could have had more. Radcliffe, who was supposed to be the quickest player in the league got slaughtered even though he had a 5 yard start

SOH - absolutely correct.
Paul Walsh dived, they got a penalty, and Ray got sent off for dissent, being outraged by an outrageous decision.
My impression was we were on top until that happened. If we'd won that and every other result had been the same, we would have been Champions.
Liverpool have done us out of one of each of the top domestic trophies (excluding the Charity Shield, if that counts, but they'll probably get around to that).

Neil Orr played in midfield for most of that season. Things unraveled in the seasons that followed. Injuries and bad signings but I get the feeling complacency set in amongst some of the players. Arguably Lyall should have come down harder on some of them.

as a 13 year old I loved that game at West Brom, behind the goal up on the fence when Ray Stewart smashed that penalty home. My first taste of fake news that day when someone up in the stands to my right announced Chelsea were winning

Spurs away was a sicker too as we were flying and they were meh.......think Perryman 'the old man' by then scored the winner as well.

I think the 1-0 loss at Highbury was the annoying. First half we were all over them. Should have bee 0-4 at half time.
Then the Alvin sending off was diabolical. O'Leary chased Martin the length of the pitch i think and lumped him and stayed on. Cunts.

I wonder if John had lost a bit of ambition In some ways after the club denied him the opportunity to go to QPR in 83ish I think to replace the Barcelona bound Terry Venables. The board let him speak to QPR then at the 11th hour demanded compensation. John didn't want to rock the boat so stayed. Hence why the way the board disposed of him in 89 was a disgrace.
Some of the players reckon if they had had Dicks and Ince at their best in 85/86 they would have probably won the thing. Even if Paul Allen had stayed in a central role who knows. Agree though that signings post 86 weren't good enough. Stewart Robson was a good player but slowed everything down and tried to be Superman. Liverpool always went out and bought 2 or 3 quality players to add to the squad and West Ham missed the boat in that summer. Don't think Johan can be blamed totally as the board were a stingy lot and Frank and Mark weren't big financial signings, they just hot the ground running.

My second son was born Friday March 28th, Good Friday. He had to stay in hospital for light treatment, under developed liver or something, looked yellow. So Saturday 29th we were playing Chelsea at their place. By some good luck while I was visiting wife and baby I just happened to put the headphones on. Feck me the game was on! Hollered and shouted in the ward that we had scored 4. Missus said I woke up everybody who was sleeping. Great memories./

I personally thought a Liverpool Chelsea draw would have been better than a Chelsea win, because we would have needed to beat Everton either way, 1-0 being enough. If Chelsea had won, 1-0 would have been enough for Everton, but a draw meant they would have had to beat us by loads of goals to win the league.
